Guadacanal. The small island in the Solomans where U.S. forces launched the first American offensive against Japan in the Pacific. The campaign that followed was bitterly fought with heavy casualties incurred by both sides. The prize was Henderson Field, an airstrip from which American forces hoped to launch future air strikes against the Japanese-held territory. Guadalcanal. Where legends were made.
