Description
Description
Field of Mars is a supplement for Red Sash Games' Lace Wars™ series and also a standalone game. It provides the means to play out battles generated during a Lace Wars™ operational game on a tactical board, rather than resolving them with a combat results table. As a game in its own right, any number of randomly generated battles can be enjoyed; players can also create their own historical scenarios. With a bit of common sense, the game can be modified to suit other operational game systems covering the horse and musket era.
Battles are fought on a gridded map sheet. Terrain tiles are added to create unique situations. The players' forces are grouped into stacks called 'wings'; wings are the game's 'maneuver units'. In each round of play, the players roll dice and assign them to their wings. The number of pips showing on a die indicate the range of tactical options available to its wing, such as Advance, Disengage, Rally, Fire, or Assault. Each tactical option has its own slot in the sequence of play, and step by step, the players activate their wings to conduct one of the options permitted to them.
The object of the game is to render enemy wings 'hors de combat'. In game terms this means the wing is removed from play. The first player to reach the hors de combat limit set by the scenario or situation loses the battle.
