Catan: Traders & Barbarians - 5-6 Player Extension (Fifth Edition)

Compatibility with 6th Edition

This is the Fifth Edition printing. CATAN Studio confirms that previous and current editions can be used together, so this extension works with the Sixth Edition of Traders & Barbarians. Nothing about the gameplay changes. What differs is how the components look.

What You'll Need

This is an extension, not a standalone game. To play, you'll need all four boxes:

• CATAN
• CATAN: 5–6 Player Extension
• CATAN: Traders & Barbarians
• This extension

What's Different

Card backs. Sixth Edition reprinted the artwork, so cards from this box won't match a Sixth Edition deck. That's worth sorting out for any deck you draw from face-down or hold in hand. Opaque-backed sleeves in CATAN size will do it — clear sleeves won't, since the old art still shows through. Sleeve the full deck rather than just the new cards. CATAN Studio also sells a Traders & Barbarians replacement card pack if you'd rather have a permanent fix.

Wagons. Sixth Edition uses tiles where this printing uses cards. They work the same way.

Player colours. Sixth Edition 5–6 player sets swapped brown for purple, and the roads are slightly larger. This only comes up if your base 5–6 Player Extension is a Sixth Edition copy.

Paired player rule. An optional rule added in the Sixth Edition printings. It isn't in this rulebook, but you can find it on catan.com.
