Sail

This game is a deceptively complex game. Based on the box size I was thinking this would be an easy-ish game. You set the board up based on a scenario in the rulebook placing obstacles, storm clouds, and overall length of the board. It's a trick taking, co-operative, 2-player game. You can talk and discuss strategy prior to starting the game but once the cards are dealt, no communication is supposed to occur.
Certain combinations of cards let you do certain actions - destroy a kraken, sailing, etc. You are trying to balance who wins the tricks as the round is over once a player completes their 4th trick (we figured out we needed to try and alternate trick winning to prolong the round). You also have to factor in who should win based on which way your ship needs to travel to avoid obstacles (the ship moves in the direction of the trick winning player). There are multiple ways that you can lose the game which creates a tension that you are always battling.
We initially played this and didn't think we were doing it correctly as we couldn't win. We consulted youtube, we were playing it correctly and we fine tuned out strategies and we eventually won.
While trick taking is not my preferred type of game, this one was challenging and interesting. The depth of play is good based on the size of the box and the price. Bought a second copy to give as a gift.
