A special 3d terrain pack including 159 beautiful miniatures representing all hex tiles from the game (the castle 3d minis are already included in the Special Edition box). The minis are designed to replace the hex tiles used in the basic game.
I had the basic Alea version and I really enjoyed it but the special edition with the terrain brings this game to life.
Are they necessary to play the game? No, not at all. Does it give a great table presence when playing Castles of Burgundy? Duh, yeah- who doesn't love cool building minis and miniature sheep! To me it is worth it, since, I really like the game and own the Special Edition.
