Very good deck management. Didn`t think it was that strategic. You have to use your deck very carefully to be able to make the tight turns and not lose control. In same way using an unseen card on your stack to boost may be beneficial or can over shoot you on the long stretchs or overheat your engine in the long run. The theme is very present.
Very good replayability. The game comes with a lot of different ways to play: single race, tournements, small expansions and variants.
Can't get enough of this game. Have only played with the basic rules so far and it has somehow exceeded the hype. Great for a group, needed to watch a teach video for some rule clarifications though (just for Adrenaline and React steps).
The stickers are super cute, but there is supposed to be one of each sticker facing both direction for each of the sides of the meeples, but all the duck stickers are facing the same way, meaning that only one side of the duck meeple can get stickered.
I really enjoy playing Spirit Island and highly recommend it. It's my first more complex game and it's a blast!
My favorite game is probably Cosmic Encounter, and just like Cosmic Encounter has asymmetric alien powers that change up the game every time you play, Spirit Island does the same with spirits. The game feels practically brand new with every spirit you choose. I explain the game to new players as pandemic levelled up.
My only complaint really is the complexity. It both makes it really fun but also a potential barrier to entry for some, and certainly not a game for every situation. But I have to say that regardless, I still love it. It has jumped up to one of my favorite games even though I tend to prefer competitive games.
