In 1271, 17-year-old Marco Polo started on a journey to China with his father and older brother. After a long and grueling journey that led through Jerusalem and Mesopotamia and over the "Silk Road", they reached the court of Kublai Khan in 1275.
In The Voyages of Marco Polo, players recreate this journey, with each player having a different character and special power in the game. The game is played over five rounds. Each round, the players roll their five personal dice and can perform one action each turn with them. The five main actions are shown on the bottom part of the board:
After five rounds, the game ends with players receiving victory points for arriving in Beijing, fulfilling the most orders, and having reached the cities on secret city cards that each player gets at the start of the game; these points are added to the VPs gained during the game.
Auf den Spuren von Marco Polo should not be confused with Marco Polo Expedition, which had the same German title.
The mechanic balance very well between strategy and tactic. I love how you have to figure out how to exploit the map with what you have in your hand, build an efficiency engine and then deal with your dice results every turn. This game will not worn you out but bring you great joy and satisfaction after played.
From the same designers of Grand Austria Hotel, just a different theme, it has point to point movement besides dice placement, excellent game.
Alot of fun, multiple character tiles and city tiles make each game you play very different from the last! I love the dice placement concept, and the board and components are beautiful. My only gripe is that the larger resource tokens that are meant to represent 3 of the smaller resources are only slightly larger than the small resource tokens they are representing, making it hard to distinguush between the two sizes. Otherwise, if you are looking for fun dice placement mechanism, get Marco Polo!
Solid dice drafting game, I would put it on the same level of game quality as Troyes and Teotihuacan, though it is slightly less complex. Would reccomend to anyone.
Don't believe all the SU&SD goofiness. Except the part where they say it's "excellent" and "fun". This game will deliver years of fun.
